OVERVIEW:   PRELUDE TO FREEDOM: The Contraband Slaves Story at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center, an immersive event that delves into the incredible journey of the enslaved later known as Contraband seeking freedom during the Civil War.  Experience their struggles, triumphs, and the pivotal role they played in shaping American history.  This in-person event promises to be a powerful and enlightening experience that will leave you inspired and informed.  Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn about this important little known chapter in our nation's past.

“Prelude to Freedom” was composed and written by Gerri L. Hollins, an accomplished musician, founder of the Contraband Historical Society, and a direct descendant of the first “Contrabands.”  The drama combines stirring original music with gripping historical storytelling, drawing on real family struggles and the courageous acts of those who dared to seek freedom in 1861.
